INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

What are Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities?

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DDs) are conditions that affect a person’s physical, learning, or emotional development. These disabilities often appear before age 22 and last a person’s entire life.

Examples of an I/DD include mild to severe intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, or a physical impairment such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.

How are I/DDs Diagnosed?

To find out if someone has an I/DD, a professional (such as a doctor or a therapist) needs to do a full assessment.

Additionally, a person must have at least three functional limitations in any of the seven life areas to be diagnosed with an I/DD:

  • Self-care
  • Receptive and expressive language
  • Learning
  • Mobility
  • Self-direction
  • Capacity for independent living
  • Economic self-sufficiency
