In the spring of 1961, a pivotal moment unfolded in Michigan’s legislative halls. The Michigan Senate, sensing the need for change, convened a special committee tasked with examining the state of community mental health services. Fueled by the committee’s recommendations and bolstered by the unwavering support of the Mental Health Society, identical bills found their way into both the House and Senate chambers. By the close of 1963, a dozen counties had taken bold steps forward, establishing pioneering community mental health programs under this groundbreaking act.
It was against this backdrop that the Macomb County Community Mental Health (MCCMH) emerged as a beacon of hope. With the guidance of the MCCMH board, the organization wasted no time in forging robust partnerships within the community, partnerships that endure to this day in championing the cause of MCCMH and the individuals we serve.
These individuals, entrusted to the care of MCCMH, span a spectrum of needs, from those grappling with intellectual or developmental disabilities to others battling with mental illness or substance use disorders.
Since its inception, MCCMH has undergone a remarkable evolution, expanding its offerings to the community. From integrative healthcare to substance use support, MCCMH has become a lifeline for many. Fast forward to the present day, where MCCMH stands as a towering pillar of support, overseeing a vast service network that extends its benevolent reach to over 18,000 community members. Anchored by a budget sourced from MDHHS, local general funds, grants, and the unwavering support of Macomb County, MCCMH continues to lead the way of breaking the stigma surrounding Mental Health in Macomb County.
Serving as an Opioid Health Home, MCCMH pioneers innovative, integrative, and sustainable care management programs tailored for Medicaid beneficiaries with opioid use disorder. In its multifaceted role, MCCMH serves as a Pre-paid Inpatient Health Plan (PIHP), a Community Mental Health Service Program (CMHSP), a MI Health Link provider, a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), and a beacon of hope as an Opioid Health Home.
With nearly six decades of experience dedicated to “Putting People First” and delivering quality care services to Macomb County, the journey is far from over. As the horizon beckons with new challenges and opportunities, MCCMH remains guided by its commitment to the community it serves, forging ahead on a path of compassion, innovation, and a tireless dedication to our Macomb Community.
